Oh happy days! It has been raining and I love rainy days! The weather has been horrid lately and the rain is heaven-sent.
I know I haven’t been on the ball in updating this blog. I keep digressing! In fact I have 2 pending entries on draft-mode at the moment and I promise to post them up by the end of the week!
Anyways, I went to NTUC @ AMK Hub earlier to shop for groceries and I was specifically looking for Manhattan Clam Chowder – which consist of clear broth set in tomato for flavour. But all I could find are the New Engand ones – and they are creamy.. Yucks! Anyway it was NTUC, so I should not be expecting much.
While browing through the fish section, I came across clams for 24cents per 100g! Cheap! Hence, I bought around 3 kilos which came about less than $8. Since I couldn’t find my preferred chowder, I decided to cook my own soup.
This is a recipe which my late grandmother taught me. It’s very simple, really!
You first wash the clams..
Then add a teeny-weeny bit of oil and heat up the wok or saucepan…
As the wok is heating up, quickly slice some ginger..
And a small onion.. (You may want to add chopped garlic, but unfortunately I don’t have any in my kitchen so I have to make do without)
And set aside some salt..
Saute the ginger and onion but make sure that they don’t burn..
After about 2-3mins, add water enough to engulf and submerge the clams…
Then add a tiny pinch of salt and the pour in the washed clams on medium fire …
The clams will open their shell after a while..
And once it starts to boil, give it a few more mins before putting out the flame..
Look at how juicy they look! And they are all MINE!
And there you have it, clear home-made clam soup all for under $8!
I guess $8 worth of clams can serve up to 4 people but I bet I am able to finish them all by myself in a matter of hours!
It is best to garnish this dish with spring onions. But since I meant to eat it myself, I skipped on the garnishing. This truly beats having to pay $10 for spicy Sambal Lala at the hawker centres.
It’s best to enjoy it while pipping hot though! I’m having mine while watching Glee on Star World! *Slurp*
Oh and guess what else I found at NTUC…
Cadbury Mini-Eggs!!
Which means Easter is just round the corner! Thanks to Aznie who posted these on her faceball mobile uploads, I actually went on a hunt for them before heading to the check-out counter. And I bought 3 packets!!
I am a happy camper!
